Plant Trees to help the environment and to help you sell your home
Trees provide curb appeal and can possibly increase your property value. Trees also provide character for your home and they provide habitats for wildlife, absorb carbon dioxide and protect the soil against erosion. Planting trees may save you money giving your home shade and possibly saving you on your annual engery costs.
- Check with a local nursery or with the extension office, e.g. K-State extension office for the best species in our area
- Possible positioning may be placing trees on the east and west facing sides of the home to shade windows
- Place trees at least 10 feet away from your house
- Several evergreen trees planted in a row could help block cold winds in the winter
- Place mulch at the base of the trees
- Check your trees often for broken branches, and for yellowing, damaged or dying folliage.
- Prune your trees removing dead lims and thinning branches to shape the tree
Flowers can help you sell your home
Curb appeal uis one of the most important projects you can do to help sell your home. Make your home inviting by planting flowers, put decorative flower pots, beautify the front of your home so that it's like putting out a welcome sign to entice buyers. PLan and select plants with staggered bloom periods for the longest season of color and mix different plant textures, shapes and sizes. Plant dark and light colored flowers. You can plant foliage, bright berries or fruit. Add mulch to the bed to retain moisture and help keep out the weeds.
- Spring and Early summer Perennials: campanulas, dianthus, geraniums, or phlox
- Midsummer Perennials: yarrow, coreopsis, daylilies and rudbeckia
- Fall Perennials: asters, penstemon, and mums
- Foliage: ornamental grasses, hostas, and artmisia
- Quick blooming plants: pansies, violas, calendulas, primroses, zinnias, marigolds, and vincas
